What four types of magnets are there?


From magnetic therapy to electrical generators, magnets are unique devices with various uses. Magnets can be classified into many categories based on the materials they are made of and how they generate their magnetic fields. The four main types of magnets and their distinctive characteristics will be discussed in this article.

#1. Permanent Magnets

The most prevalent magnet type is a permanent magnet, utilized in everyday items like magnetic toys and refrigerator magnets. These magnets are naturally constructed from elements with a magnetic field, such as iron, nickel, and cobalt. These materials include atoms arranged in a particular configuration to produce a magnetic field. Even when separated from the magnetic field that had them, permanent magnets continue to be magnetic.

#2. Electromagnets

Temporary magnets called electromagnets are produced when an electric current travels across a wire. The motion of the wire’s electrons creates the magnetic field. The amount of current flowing through the wire and the coil’s number of turns affect the strength of the magnetic field. Speakers, electric motors, and MRI machines are just a few devices that utilize magnets.

#3. Temporary Magnets

Materials that can be magnetized but soon lose their magnetism when the magnetic field is withdrawn are called temporary magnets. Soft iron is a type of transient magnet. Iron becomes magnetized when exposed to a magnetic field, but as soon as the magnetic field is taken away, the iron stops being magnetized. Electromagnets and other devices that require a temporary magnetic field frequently use temporary magnets.

#4. Superconducting Magnets

The strong magnets, superconducting ones, are employed in MRI equipment, maglev trains, and high-energy physics experiments. These magnets are constructed from substances that transform into superconductors at shallow temperatures, allowing the current to flow without resistance. This generates a magnetic field far more significant than any magnetic field produced by any other form of magnet.
