1. Stop buying things
One of the most important things you can do to reduce your waste is to quit buying so many goods. When you buy new goods, you create demand for that item as well as desire for the trip of creation and the garbage that comes with it. Saying no to goods you don’t need and being grateful for what you already have is one of the most essential actions you can take to reduce your waste.
2. Avoid food wrapped in plastic
Unfortunately, most food nowadays is covered in plastic. And if you look in your trash right now, I’m sure a lot, if not most, of it is plastic from food packaging. As stores cover everything in plastic, this is one of the most difficult challenges we face on a daily basis. You can’t always win, so try to choose meals that aren’t wrapped in plastic.
3. Bing your own bag
Make sure you bring your own bag when you leave the house. Plastic bags must be phased out, and instead, we must all bring our own reusable choice. The ideal size for bringing food or shopping home. Remember, if the worst happens and you forget, just carry the stuff! Don’t be ashamed to refuse single-use plastic and instead use your arms.
4. Buy local
Not only is it better for the local economy, but local markets and retailers frequently use much less plastic to wrap their groceries. So, get organized, and schedule your weekly shopping to include a visit to the local farmer’s market or green grocer’s before going to the supermarket. It’s a terrific way to uncover more zero waste options, get amazing deals on fruits and vegetables, and feel a sense of community by buying locally.
5. Buy things in bulk
Check online to discover whether you can buy foods in bulk in your area. Bring your own containers and stock up on the necessities without the additional packing!
6. Avoid one-time use items/foods
Avoid using plastic cutlery, straws, plates, glasses, and single-use food products such as pre-packaged salads, sandwiches, dressing, yogurts, and so on. These items can be readily replaced with reusable or multipurpose alternatives by being prepared and saying no.
7. Get your own reusable bottle
Plastic bottles can take up to 450 years to degrade, making it more crucial than ever to avoid purchasing plastic water bottles and instead bring our own reusable equivalents.
8. Reusable cutlery and storage contents
It is critical to bring your own when avoiding single-use things! They’re very easy to grab and throw in your bag while you’re on the go, allowing you to avoid using plastic spoons and forks. The same goes for containers. Take whatever containers you currently have and place them in your bag when you know you’ll be eating food that may come in plastic wrapping that day.
9. Meal plan
As previously stated, meal planning can significantly reduce food waste. Being organized with what you’re going to eat over the week ensures that you don’t over-purchase items that you won’t consume or that will go bad and wind up in the trash. Simply set aside 10–15 minutes each week to plan out your meals for the week and make a shopping list. You may even go a step further and meal plan your foods to avoid buying plastic-packaged items while out and about!
