In 1845, two men from Maine were trying to decide what to name their new town. They decided to flip a coin, with the winner getting to choose the name. The man who won chose Portland, after the city in Maine where he was born. The California Gold Rush when gold was discovered in California in 1848, it sparked a massive rush of people looking to strike it rich. This led to a lot of chaos and lawlessness in the state, so they decided to flip a coin to see if they should become a state or not. Luckily for Californians, they won the toss and became our 31st state!

Ritchie Valens’ Death

In 1959, the rock and roll world was rocked by the death of Ritchie Valens in a plane crash. He was only 17 years old. The tragedy could have been even worse, as Buddy Holly and J.P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson was also killed in the same crash. Some believe that Valens’ death could have been prevented if he had not decided to flip a coin to see who would get to use the only available seat on the plane.

The Wright brothers are credited with inventing the aeroplane, and they made their first successful flight in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, in 1903. They were not originally from Kitty Hawk but chose it as their test site after flipping a coin!
