Adhesive Types and their Differences

There are many different types of adhesives, each designed for specific conditions & applications, and there are multiple factors to consider when choosing the correct product. A variety of factors contribute to the classification of adhesives, including their chemical composition, physical form, classification, and load-bearing capacity.

We will discuss the different types of adhesives in this article.

1, Adhesives by chemical composition

There are a variety of adhesives available based on their chemical compositions. Below are a few examples.

2, Adhesives made of epoxy

An epoxy is a type of structural adhesive that can be structurally bonded to a wide range of materials, including metals, ceramics, wood, and plastics.

3, Adhesives made of polyimide

The polyimides are known for their strength, heat and chemical resistance, as well as their performance at extremely high temperatures, as high as 500°C.

It is available in two formulations, thermoset and thermoplastic, and is often used for coating or electronic insulation and comes in two formulations.

4, Adhesives made of polyurethane

Polyurethanes are polymer-based adhesives used for constructions requiring high bond strength and permanent elasticity. They are often offered as two-part adhesives and have many applications. They require moisture to set, so they can be used for projects where epoxy glues are not usually suitable.

Polyurethane adhesives, such as Adbond EX 5690, offer a high degree of flexibility, can be painted, and are weather resistant. This makes them ideal for the transportation industry.

5, Adhesives by physical form

Adhesives may be spread manually or with tools and equipment based on their physical form.

The following is a list of the different types of physical forms.

Liquid

The most common adhesive is liquid. They are easy to apply, but can leak or sag during curing. They often take a long time to cure, but can be applied in thin layers to speed up the process.

Paste

The viscosity of adhesive pastes makes them difficult to spread during the curing process. They are used for adhesions requiring gap filling and are typically applied using tools like caulking guns.

Pellets

Pellets of adhesive are usually hot melt or thermosetting adhesives that must be melted and sprayed or inserted into a hot melt gun.

Film

These adhesive films are available in rolls or pre-cut lengths or shapes, are easy to apply, and do not have pot-life restrictions. They are available in thicknesses between 2 and 8 mm depending on the application.

6, Adhesives by load bearing capability

It can be divided into three categories based on how well an adhesive holds different substrates together.

Structural

There are structural adhesives available as pastes, liquids, and films. They are strong and usually used below their glass transition temperature (Tg), the temperature at which polymers become soft and rubbery.

Epoxies, cyanoacrylates, urethanes, and acrylics are some of the best-known structural adhesives.

Non-structural

In addition to light loads or aesthetic applications, non-structural adhesives are also much more cost-efficient than structural adhesives. However, they are not suitable for all types of projects. Instead of serving as a primary adhesive, non-structural adhesives are frequently used as secondary fasteners in long-term attachments.

Semi-structural

A semi-structural adhesive is ideal for less critical applications, even though it offers more strength and support than non-structural adhesives. Due to the strength and support offered by semi-structural adhesives, they can be used to replace either structural adhesive applications or non-structural adhesive applications, depending on the application.
